Welcome back, starting today, we’re beginning a skin infection series because our skin is one of the most important organs of the body. Any problem affecting the skin can impact us physically as well as emotionally. In this article, we’ll talk about ringworm (daad)—a very common fungal skin infection.

Every day I meet many people who have been struggling with ringworm for months. Many have tried different medicines and home remedies, but the infection keeps coming back. If you’re facing the same problem, read this article till the end because I’ll explain the causes, prevention, and treatment in a very simple way.

First, let’s understand what ringworm actually is.

Despite its name, ringworm is not caused by a worm. It is a fungal infection that affects the outer layer of the skin and sometimes the scalp, hair, or nails. The infection spreads through direct contact with an infected person or animal, or by sharing towels, clothes, bedding, combs, or other personal items.

Several factors increase the risk of getting ringworm. Excessive sweating, wearing tight clothing, poor personal hygiene, humid weather, weak immunity, diabetes, poor nutrition, and certain medicines that suppress the immune system can all make fungal infections more likely.

Ringworm usually begins as a small, itchy, circular patch. As it spreads, the border becomes raised while the center may appear clearer. You may also notice redness, scaling, peeling, or intense itching. In Ayurveda, this condition is known as Dadru, which is traditionally associated with an imbalance of Kapha and Pitta doshas.

Now let’s talk about what you should avoid.

Avoid wearing tight, synthetic, or damp clothes. Change sweaty clothes as soon as possible and always keep the affected area clean and dry. Do not scratch the infected skin because scratching can spread the fungus to other parts of your body.

From a dietary perspective, some Ayurvedic practitioners recommend reducing very spicy, oily, fried, and heavily processed foods. Limiting excessive sugar may also be helpful for overall health. Most importantly, avoid sharing towels, clothing, razors, or bedding with others until the infection has completely healed.

Now let’s discuss what you should include in your routine.

Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and adequate protein. Drink enough water throughout the day and get proper sleep to support your immune system.

Now let’s look at some commonly used home remedies.

Garlic contains natural compounds that have shown antifungal activity in laboratory studies. However, raw garlic can burn the skin and may even cause chemical burns, so it should never be applied directly without caution. If you choose to try it, test a very small area first and stop immediately if irritation develops.

Using an antifungal soap or cleanser may help keep the affected area clean, but soap alone cannot cure ringworm. Continue maintaining good hygiene even after the rash improves.

Apple cider vinegar is another popular home remedy, but scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness against ringworm is limited. It may also irritate sensitive skin, so use it carefully and discontinue use if burning or redness becomes severe.

Fresh aloe vera gel is soothing and may help calm irritated skin. While it has some antimicrobial properties, it should be considered supportive care rather than a complete treatment for ringworm.

Some traditional remedies also include licorice paste, turmeric, diluted tea tree oil, coconut oil, and pomegranate leaf paste. Although some of these ingredients have shown antifungal properties in laboratory studies, more clinical research is needed to confirm how well they work in people.

If the infection is spreading, covers a large area, affects the scalp or nails, keeps returning, or does not improve within two weeks, please consult a qualified dermatologist or healthcare professional. Prescription antifungal creams or oral antifungal medicines may be necessary, and it is important to complete the full course of treatment even if the rash starts looking better. Stopping treatment too early is one of the main reasons ringworm comes back.

The best way to prevent ringworm is through good hygiene.

  • Keep your skin clean and dry.
  • Bathe after sweating or exercising.
  • Wash clothes, towels, and bedsheets regularly.
  • Never share personal items.
  • Wear loose, breathable cotton clothing.
  • Treat infected pets if advised by a veterinarian.
  • Maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle to support your immune system.

Friends, remember that home remedies may provide support, but they are not a replacement for medical treatment, especially in moderate or severe infections. Early diagnosis and proper treatment help prevent the infection from spreading to other parts of the body or to other people.

Thank you for watching. Stay healthy, take care of your skin, and I’ll see you in the next article. Goodbye!
