Constipation happens when your digestive system slows down and stool becomes hard and difficult to pass. You have to strain during bowel movements, and if the problem continues for a long time, it can lead to discomfort and other health issues. Most healthy adults have bowel movements anywhere from three times a week to three times a day, depending on the individual. If your bowel habits change significantly or you regularly struggle to pass stool, it’s worth paying attention to.

Constipation can be caused by several factors, including an unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement, not drinking enough water, eating too quickly, and ongoing stress.

Eating without chewing food properly, irregular meal timings, consuming excessive fried or processed foods, overeating, poor sleep, and mental stress can all contribute to constipation. Drinking too much tea or coffee may also worsen the problem in some people.

The remedies shared here are inspired by traditional Ayurvedic practices and personal experience. Many people find these approaches helpful, but everyone’s body is different. If you have persistent constipation, severe pain, blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, or constipation lasting more than a few weeks, consult a qualified healthcare professional. Pregnant women, children, older adults, and people with chronic illnesses should also seek medical advice before trying herbal remedies.

When stool becomes hard and dry, passing it requires excessive straining. Over time, this may increase the risk of hemorrhoids (piles) or anal fissures. People with constipation often experience loss of appetite, bloating, excessive gas, a feeling of incomplete evacuation, and bad breath. Because digestion affects overall health, maintaining regular bowel movements is important.

Now let’s talk about how to improve constipation naturally.

The first step is not medicine—it’s correcting the root cause. Temporary relief from laxatives won’t solve the problem if unhealthy habits continue. Good digestion begins with a healthy lifestyle.

Wake up early and try to establish a regular toilet routine. Even if you don’t feel the urge immediately, sitting on the toilet at the same time every morning can help train your bowels. A morning walk or light exercise also stimulates digestion.

Eat plenty of fiber-rich foods such as green vegetables, papaya, guava, oranges, apples, pears, and whole grains. Using whole wheat flour with more bran instead of very finely refined flour can increase your daily fiber intake.

Drink enough water throughout the day. Rather than drinking large amounts during meals, many people find it more comfortable to stay hydrated between meals.

Reduce fried foods, heavily processed foods, excessive spices, and excessive red chili if they trigger digestive discomfort. Choose lighter meals that are easier to digest. Moong dal and masoor dal are generally easier on digestion than heavier legumes for some people.

Now let’s look at some traditional Ayurvedic home remedies.

One simple remedy is to drink a glass of warm water before bed and another glass after waking up in the morning. This may help stimulate bowel movements in some people.

Another traditional remedy is soaked fenugreek seeds. Gulkand with warm milk is also commonly used in Ayurveda, especially for people who experience heat or burning sensations along with constipation.

Roasted psyllium husk (isabgol) mixed with a little roasted fennel can be taken after dinner with warm milk or water. Psyllium is a good source of soluble fiber and may help soften stools when taken with adequate water.

Roasted harad (Terminalia chebula) mixed with black salt is another traditional Ayurvedic preparation. Triphala is also widely used in Ayurveda to support digestion, though it should be used according to individual needs and preferably under professional guidance.

Soaking raisins overnight and eating them in the morning may also help because raisins contain fiber and natural sugars that can support bowel movements.

Papaya is one of the best fruits for constipation. Eating about 100–150 grams daily can help improve digestion. During the summer, bael fruit is also traditionally used to support digestive health.

Some people use a small amount of castor oil as a traditional remedy. However, castor oil can cause strong bowel movements and is not suitable for everyone. It should not be used regularly without medical advice, especially by pregnant women, older adults, or people with certain medical conditions.

Along with diet, yoga can be very beneficial. Regular practice of Vajrasana, Pawanmuktasana, Uttanpadasana, and Janu Shirshasana may help improve digestion and bowel regularity. Gentle stretching, walking, and staying physically active are equally important.

Most importantly, be consistent. Constipation usually doesn’t disappear overnight. Healthy eating, enough water, regular exercise, proper sleep, and stress management together provide the best long-term results.

If constipation continues for more than two to three weeks despite lifestyle changes, or if you notice severe abdominal pain, vomiting, persistent bleeding, black stools, or sudden unexplained weight loss, seek medical attention promptly.
